Beyond the species list
A sense of place.
Batan is the main inhabited island of Batanes. Mount Iraya dominates its north and Mount Matarem its south, with a narrower, hilly stretch between them. Sabtang lies southwest of Batan; Itbayat is farther to the northwest.
Landscape & habitats
The island’s volcanic form meets the sea in a succession of hills, slopes and coastal headlands. Open green hills such as Manganday are a distinctive part of this landscape, contrasting with the higher relief of its volcanic mountains.

Zoogeography
Batanes fauna and local habitat diversity
Batan belongs to the isolated Batanes group. A comparative survey published in 2015 recorded regional endemics including McGregor’s pit viper on Batan and Sabtang. The authors associated Batan’s diversity with its varied terrain and forest habitats.
These are findings from particular survey sites, not proof that every part of the island supports the same assemblage.
How to read the historical island groups
During Pleistocene glacial periods, lower sea levels exposed shallow seabeds and joined some present-day islands. Biogeographers call these reconstructed landmasses Pleistocene Aggregate Island Complexes (PAICs). Deep channels continued to separate others. This model helps explain regional similarities, but dispersal, older geology and habitat differences also shaped each fauna.
“Endemic” means restricted to a stated area; a Philippine endemic need not be confined to one island. The account above summarises published regional and local research. It does not add occurrences to the snake index below.
